COTALAND Opening Weekend Review: My First Impressions of Austin's New Amusement Park

After years of watching COTALAND slowly come together at Circuit of the Americas, I finally got to spend an entire weekend enjoying the park as a guest.

I've made countless trips to Del Valle to document construction, sometimes returning after several months to find that very little had changed. Seeing the pathways filled with guests and the attractions operating was particularly rewarding after following the project for so long.

I spent the entire opening weekend at COTALAND to get a proper feel for the experience. There were plenty of things I enjoyed, along with some areas that still need attention as the park continues developing.

These are my first impressions of COTALAND's opening weekend and what I hope to see from Austin's newest amusement park.

COTALAND finally welcomes guests

COTALAND's journey to opening day took considerably longer than originally expected.

Over the years, construction moved through periods of substantial progress followed by stretches when seemingly nothing was happening. There were times when people questioned whether the project would ever be completed.

That history made opening weekend particularly exciting for those of us who had been following the park's development.

Walking through the entrance and seeing guests enjoying the property was a welcome change from filming construction equipment and unfinished foundations.

The park still has quite a bit of work ahead of it, but being able to experience COTALAND as an operating amusement park was something I'd been looking forward to for years.

The roller coasters and attractions

Circuit Breaker and Palindrome have been two of the biggest reasons roller coaster enthusiasts have been following COTALAND.

Circuit Breaker brings a Vekoma tilt coaster to Central Texas, introducing an unusual ride experience where a section of track physically tilts before releasing the train into its drop.

Palindrome offers a completely different experience with its compact Gerstlauer shuttle layout, sending riders through the course both forward and backward.

Retro Rambler provides another option in the park's growing collection of attractions.

While the roller coasters have received most of the attention, COTALAND is also developing a broader collection of family attractions and flat rides.

Unfortunately, several attractions were still awaiting completion or their public debut during opening weekend.

That limited the overall ride selection, particularly for guests hoping to experience everything the park has planned.

As the remaining attractions become operational, COTALAND should offer a more complete experience for families and guests who aren't exclusively interested in roller coasters.

Entertainment brings energy to the park

One of the things I appreciated throughout opening weekend was how frequently entertainment seemed to be happening.

There was usually something going on around the property, which helped keep the atmosphere lively even when I wasn't riding anything.

Music was also playing throughout the park. It's a relatively simple detail, but it helps prevent areas from feeling empty or disconnected from the rest of the experience.

I also enjoyed hearing race cars making their way around Circuit of the Americas while walking through COTALAND.

That's a pretty unique feature of the park's location. Hearing engines in the distance while spending the afternoon at an amusement park is something I haven't experienced anywhere else.

The combination of the entertainment, background music, and activity around the property gave COTALAND an enjoyable atmosphere during its opening weekend.

The staff made a great first impression

The employees were another highlight of my weekend.

Everyone I interacted with seemed friendly and genuinely excited to be working at the park.

The bar staff were particularly great. They were welcoming and helped make the experience enjoyable whenever I stopped for a drink.

Opening a new amusement park comes with plenty of operational challenges, especially when employees are still getting accustomed to their roles.

It's encouraging to see that the people working at COTALAND are already making such a positive impression.

Hopefully, that enthusiasm continues as the park settles into its regular operations.

COTALAND looks fantastic at night

My favorite part of the entire COTALAND experience was spending time at the park after dark.

The atmosphere changes considerably once the sun goes down. The lighting around the attractions and pathways makes the property feel much more inviting.

It's also considerably more comfortable to explore the park once the intense Texas sunshine is no longer beating down on you.

I really hope COTALAND considers extending its operating hours to take better advantage of the evening.

Personally, I'd much rather see the park open at noon and close around 10 or 11 at night, particularly during the hotter months.

That would allow guests to enjoy more of the park during the evening instead of spending most of their visit in the afternoon heat.

Given its location at Circuit of the Americas and the venue's existing experience hosting nighttime entertainment, I think COTALAND has an opportunity to make evening operations a regular part of its identity.

Food, drinks, and the future cantina

The food and beverage experience is another area I'm interested in watching as COTALAND develops.

I enjoyed spending time at the bars throughout opening weekend, and the employees made those visits particularly pleasant.

I'm especially looking forward to the cantina opening.

Having additional places to sit, grab something to eat, and enjoy the atmosphere will be a welcome addition to the park.

I think these spaces will become increasingly important as the attraction lineup grows and more guests begin spending entire days at COTALAND.

A good amusement park needs comfortable places where families and groups can take a break between attractions.

Plenty of shade throughout the park

One thing I was happy to see was the amount of shade spread throughout COTALAND.

This is particularly important for an amusement park in Central Texas, where summer temperatures can make spending an entire afternoon outside pretty uncomfortable.

The shaded areas provide opportunities to get out of the sun while moving around the property.

As the landscaping matures, I expect the trees and surrounding vegetation to make an even greater contribution to the overall appearance and comfort of the park.

It's encouraging that COTALAND has already made shade a noticeable part of its design.

The park is still a work in progress

Despite the excitement surrounding opening weekend, there are still plenty of visible reminders that COTALAND isn't finished.

Several attractions are awaiting completion, and portions of the property still have ongoing construction and finishing work.

These unfinished elements occasionally interrupt the atmosphere, particularly when walking between completed areas.

The limited attraction lineup is also something potential visitors should consider when deciding whether to visit immediately or wait until more of the park is operational.

I'm interested to see how quickly the remaining projects progress now that COTALAND has officially opened to the public.

The cantina and additional attractions should help fill some of the gaps in the current experience.

I also expect the park's operations to evolve as employees gain experience and management becomes more familiar with regular attendance patterns.

Opening weekend provided a useful first impression, but it'll take additional visits to see how everything develops.

What COTALAND means for Central Texas

Having a new amusement park in the Austin area is something I'm genuinely excited about.

For years, Central Texas residents have primarily traveled to San Antonio or the Dallas–Fort Worth area to visit larger amusement parks with significant roller coaster collections.

COTALAND gives the Austin region another option while bringing additional entertainment and employment opportunities to Del Valle.

I don't expect the park to immediately match the size or attraction variety of more established regional parks.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas, for example, has spent decades developing its collection of roller coasters and supporting attractions.

COTALAND is starting much smaller, and it'll take time for the park to develop its own reputation and become a more complete destination.

What makes the project interesting to me is the opportunity to follow that development from the very beginning.

My overall thoughts on COTALAND's opening weekend

After spending the entire weekend exploring COTALAND, I came away feeling positive about the experience.

The employees were wonderful, the entertainment helped create a lively atmosphere, and the park was particularly enjoyable after dark.

There are still plenty of things that need to be finished, and I'm eager to see the remaining attractions begin welcoming guests.

I'd also love to see COTALAND embrace longer evening hours, especially during the warmer months when being outside after sunset is considerably more comfortable.

For anyone planning a visit, I think it's important to understand that COTALAND is still developing. The experience will continue to change as additional attractions and amenities become available.

Having followed this project for so many years, I'm particularly happy to finally see the park welcoming guests.

I'll continue documenting its progress and returning as new attractions open.

For now, it's just nice to finally have a new amusement park right here in Central Texas.
